This Sunday from 10:00 am- 4:00 pm, I will be showing some of my paintings at 2713 Sutton Blvd, in Maplewood, MO (Hoffman LaChance Contemporary) alongside the work of Michael Hoffman, as part of City-Wide Open Studios, a yearly two-day open studio tour in and around St. Louis, MO.

Open Studios is presented by Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis.

Thinking big.

Hi yall. As I sip another scalding hot cup of Colombian coffee, draw up the plans, and prepare for another day of painting, I think back to the innocent days of 1983. My Bugs Bunny drawings were a sensation, a huge hit. They made it to that great museum of creative achievement- Grandma's refrigerator. I set the bar... I could never revert to stick figures and blobby happy faces. So how, how does one compete with the standard set by Bugs Bunny, all tufted ears and carrot and whiskers? Airplanes. I wowed them with TWA jetliner drawings. Then I discovered markers, and, lookout!

A solo exhibition at gallery Hoffman LaChance in March, and a three-artist show in April demand such a trajectory. This is a new phase in development; after a drawn-out move to a land far, far away, I've snapped back into action, working on something quite new. The idea of an installation is a novel format to me, fascinating when done well. It will be most certainly a challenge to craft, synthesize, assemble, disassemble, and reassemble, originating in this distant, rural Illinois "bunker" of a studio, to be realized along with several of my panels and other surprises at Hoffman and LaChance's Maplewood gallery. I am excited, though, pumped up, game face on, and more than ready to tackle the next stage in developing my aesthetic output.

What I've Been Up To, Where the Art Is, and Other Things I Have to Get Off My Artist's Chest

As I groove to the soothing sounds of the Carpenters, I am recovering from a three-week period of mad, mad, madness. I left St. Louis to move in with the family, unemployed and of course deep in debt, but not only that, we all moved into a "cozy" -cramped- house in Wood River, near a Conoco/Philips refinery, about 35 minutes away from the bohemian artist's life I knew for the past year. Today the studio shares a room with an air mattress, and vice versa, everything is in disarray, and painting has come to a halt, but will continue immediately. And my search for a job to support this enterprise, and build a life anew, continues.

I begin again, prepared to be busier than ever before. Never take for granted the good things in life; they may be gone soon. But change like this is certainly nothing new for me, having lived in four states (14 cities- yipes!), so I'm ready to adapt, again.

Major projects are at least mentally underway, and will soon materialize. So exciting!

New work to arrive at Hoffman LaChance, Charm Boutique, and on Etsy in the coming weeks.

New Painting; SAVE THE GIRLS, A Breast Cancer Awareness Exhibition

SAVE THE GIRLS is an exhibition curated by Flax Gallery director Jenn Carter to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure. The response to the call for art was tremendous; this show will fill not only the Flax Gallery, but will include the entire main gallery at ArtDimensions' 3rd Floor Gallery, 1214 Washington Ave. The opening reception is on Friday, October 16th, from 7 to 11 PM. Art will be auctioned; a portion of the proceeds will benefit research and other efforts to fight this unfortunately pervasive disease, which affects a number of strong women whom I personally know. I am honored to be a part of this exhibition.

I will be participating the fourth Poetry Scores Art Invitational, Friday, Nov. 13 at The Luminary Center for the Arts in south St. Louis. Each artist will create an artwork based on a line from the poem "The Sydney Highrise Variations", by Australian poet Les Murray. There's more information here on the project. City-Wide Open Studios 2009

Yes, I will be participating in the City-Wide Open Studios event. It all starts Tuesday, July 21st at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis with a Preview Party to kick off the week-long exhibition of work by participating artists, from 5:30-9:30 pm. Art Review: "Pattern Recognition" at City Art Supply

My second review. Wow. Already.

.e (short for Dottie Georges) has a cool name. She is also a visual artist and a musician. Her work appears at City Art Supply, St. Louis's newest (and only) dedicated art supply store, throughout the month of March. In Pattern Recognition, Ms. Georges presents a sizable collective wall piece, composed of square paper tiles, turned on their corners and coated with concentric rings of black, blue, white, and cadmium red oilbar. The painterliness recalls Jasper Johns, but the effect of these tiles as arranged to create these rough-hewn targets, which glow against oily, pitch-black background is that of a hypnotizing, panoramic deep space. Two roundtop window shapes appear as well, bearing abstract images that resemble irises, which radiate almost tribal, jagged rays or waves. They appear to travel towards, around, and beyond the viewer. This nonobjective installation encompasses the east wall of City Art Supply, with a deep and nearly authoritarian presence, perpendicular to the much more serene installation gracing the three moveable walls. This apparently random assortment of turquoise, hexagonal tiles contains areas of space which elicit a sort of calm, a visual refuge from the more imposing, disorienting east wall arrangement.

The opening reception for Pattern Recognition takes place Saturday, March 7, from 7-9 PM, at the store, located at 3215 Cherokee Street, St. Louis. .e will perform on guitar with sound loops, followed by an electronic musician bearing the moniker "of course you realize..." Check out their links...fascinating stuff.

The 1st in a series of St. Louis area Art Reviews: "Soft", at Good Citizen Gallery

No, this is not the new look for this blog I had in mind- a change, to be sure, but merely a cleansing placeholder look- fresh, shiny, simple, and clear of distractions. And now, to tell you a little tale of a new gallery on Gravois, topped with a billboard. A BILLBOARD, for f's sake! Said billboard is unique, unprecedented for a St. Louis art gallery, and I'm sure, quite expensive; a promotional tool, kind of an elevated, Orwellian-supersized postcard ad for this flawlessly rehabbed and, by far innovative artspace.

Bear with me- it's almost 3 AM Sunday night, I just got back from a rewarding, yet challenging, yet rewarding painting session. My eyes are heavy after this long day, so expect, if you will, some run-on sentences and flowery platitiudes and misspellings because I am determined to tell you about one of the most innovative installations I have witnessed in St. Louis in quite a while.

Good Citizen Gallery, at 2247 Gravois, just south of downtown STL, features "Soft", an exhibit by Tennessean artist Hunt Clark, who first of all is one of the friendliest, most down-to-earth, and passionate practitioners of sculpture and video installation I have ever had the privilege to encounter (flowery platitudes, yes, but absolutely sincere...). His website, www.huntclark.com is a fascinating treasury of Clark's prodigious innovations, and the offering at Good Citizen likewise does not disappoint.

Picture soft, wispy, diaphanous sheets of nylon sewn together. Watch them be inflated by box fans into pillowy pipelines, billowy bulbous cushions, and puffy appendages. THRILL as suddenly, a stream of downtown Philadelphia storefronts careen up one of those pipelines, pouring onto the interstate, which spews out cars and semis from inside that big cushion. A flock of birds rise up from the undulating nylon inflated structure across the room, while dry leaves in the wind depart to the right, leading the eye up to another pipeline headed outside, above the front door, spilling out semis from a high-speed on-ramp. These video images and others are projected onto the inflated structures in the dim gallery from all angles, and as they stretch and skew across their surfaces, meld into each other, fade out, and trickle over the wrinkles, they form a most interactive, silent viewing experience, beckoning the viewer around the structures to see more. My favorite vignette, the most poignant region of this inverted universe, is a view of a forest clearing from below; the tops of trees blowing in the wind, poetically, rhythmically hypnotizing the viewer. They are a refuge from the hustle and bustle of the speeding cars and what not elsewhere. Hunt Clark demonstrates here a love of seeing and experiencing, and uses the inflated, dynamic structures as a not-so-passive silver screen, a surrogate for human sensory experience, which also undulates, quivers, and rapidly shifts its attention until it finds a quiet spot.

"Soft" will be on view from Feb. 27 to March 28, at Good Citizen Gallery.

The creative among us really aren't "there" necessarily as a result of some innate "talent", although certainly the aesthetically, musically, or otherwise gifted individual carries that advantage. Instead, they are the relentless ones, who try everything and mine their souls regularly, assess and hone their skills, actions and attributes to discover ALL advantages they have. And, when put into practice, the sum of those advantages, used to their fullest potential, can fuel magical, powerful, intense creative output.

All are the creative, who are willing to unleash their egos into damaging places.
